Savanna and Grassland Ecology (SAGE)

at Wake Forest University

Who we are

We are interested in the evolutionary and ecological implications of plant-animal interactions in grasslands and savannas.

We like our acronym SAGE not only because it reminds us of an important and widespread shrub (Artemisia tridentata), but also because it is the name of a company that makes some of the best fly rods out there!

Most of our research is done in Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania

The Serengeti is one of the most important conservation areas on earth and we argue that it functions like a time machine! ‘How so?’ you ask… it is because Serengeti is one of just a few ecosystems which retains the full suite of predators, herbivores, and megaherbivores that have been present for tens if not hundreds of millennia. On other continents these species went extinct during the collapse of Pleistocene megafauna.
